Since it was set up in 2000, the Institut Fresnel has continued to grow and assert its scientific influence in a wide variety of fields relating to wave physics. More recently, the laboratory has broadened its scientific scope to include biology, biophysics and biomedicine, with strong links to imaging.
Today, the laboratory’s research themes cover four main areas: electromagnetic modelling and simulation, nanophotonics and optical components, information processing and random waves, and advanced imaging and life. The synergies between these areas are significant and give rise to innovative projects, often at the frontiers between several disciplines. These projects can be both fundamental and applied, with strong potential for innovation, which the laboratory supports through several technology platforms.
The laboratory is currently supported by its parent institutions, Aix-Marseille Université, CNRS and Centrale Marseille. Nearly two hundred people, including one hundred permanent staff, currently work at the Institut Fresnel, with a consolidated budget of around €9 million.
