Lilian Chabrol, postdoc au IUSTI à Marseille, donnera un séminaire intitulé « Changes in perspective on the Lorenz-Mie theory for large particles » le Jeudi 27 novembre 2025 à 10h30 dans la salle Pierre Cotton de notre laboratoire.
Résumé : The Lorenz-Mie theory (LMT) provides an exact solution for the scattering of an electromagnetic plane wave by a homogeneous isotropic spherical particle. The theory is expressed as an infinite series of vector spherical harmonics and has (at least) two notable limitations: its numerical evaluation can be time-consuming for large scatterers and it offers limited physical insight into the underlying scattering processes.
To address these issues, we will discuss new mathematical and physical approximations of the LMT that are valid in both the far-field and in close proximity to the scatterer. We will also briefly discuss possible extensions to non-spherical particles and to acoustic scattering. Finally, as an illustrative application, we will consider the formation and inversion of digital in-line holograms to determine the position, size, and composition of spherical particles.
