2nd Summer School on

PHOTOTHERMAL EFFECTS IN PLASMONICS

This second edition of the Summer School 'Photothermal Effects in Plasmonics' will take place in Porquerolles' Island, from the 17th to the 22nd of October 2021. It is intended to gather around 100 people from many countries worldwide, in one of the most beautiful site of the Mediterranean coast.

For this 2nd edition, 13 lectures and 10 contributing talks will be proposed to cover most of the concepts involved in thermoplasmonics, from the fundamentals to the more advanced and promising applications. All in all, the watchword for each lecture will be to start from scratch and finish with the most advanced research.

Context

Heating metal nanoparticles with light. This is what the field of thermoplasmonics deals with and this is what this Summer School is all about.

The most exciting aspect of thermoplasmonics is that it enables one to carry out research in many fields of science. A general understanding of the world of thermoplasmonics involves knowledge in (take a deep breath) nano-optics, plasmonics, thermodynamics, molecular fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, NV centres and nanodiamonds, cell biology, organic and inorganic chemistry, fluid dynamics, phase transition, magnetism and magnetic recording, biomedicine, cancer therapy, graphene, lanthanides, acoustics, SERS, thermophoresis, fluid superheating, bubble dynamics, black body radiation, etc. This diversity of concepts along with the fact that thermoplasmonics couples optics and thermodynamics make a general understanding of thermoplasmonics difficult. This Summer School was born from this observation.

Focus on molecular plasmonics

While the 1st edition, in 2018, focused on biology and biomedical applications, this second edition targets studies involving molecules, e.g., for applications in biosensing, SERS, chemistry, etc, where photothermal effects can play a significant role, being desired or unwanted.
