M-CUBE project – Metamaterials for ultra High Field MRI, led by the Université d’Aix Marseille (AMU) via the Institut Fresnel and the Centre de Résonance Magnétique Biologique et Médicale (CRMBM), has been selected by the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 program.
Begining of the project : 01/01/2017
End : 31/12/2020
Duration : 48 mois
Budget : 3,9 millions d’euros
Launching of M-CUBE project on February 27 & 28, 2017
The M-CUBE project, MétaMatériaux pour antennes à ultra haute fréquence pour les IRM, is the winner of the European call for projects “Technologies Futures et Emergentes-OPEN-1-2016-2017”. The FET-OPEN call is one of Horizon 2020’s most competitive calls. The success rate in the “Research and Innovation Actions” (RIA) category stands at 4%: only 22 projects were selected out of 544 applications from all over Europe. Of the 22 winning projects, 4 are coordinated by French universities.
FET-OPEN calls for proposals are aimed at funding multi-disciplinary, exploratory collaborative projects. The aim of this program is to help radically new technologies emerge, by giving innovative scientific ideas a fair chance. All scientific and technological fields are eligible.
AMU is coordinator of the M-CUBE consortium, which brings together eight world-class academic players and two highly promising SMEs. The main objective is to create antennas to control radiofrequency fields for ultra-high-field MRI (7 Tesla and more), taking advantage of the remarkable properties of metamaterials. M-CUBE’s ambition is to create breakthrough technologies. In the long term, M-CUBE’s innovative approach should guarantee use in routine clinical medical imaging, and consequently the early detection of certain diseases. M-CUBE will develop solutions focused on patients’ needs, in line with the current European focus on “personalized medicine”.
