Henrik Birkedal, from Aarhus University will give a seminar entitled “Bone and Orientation” on Friday, February 14, 2025 at 09:30 a.m. room Pierre Cotton.
Abstract : Bone has a complex hierarchical structure [1] – as is indeed the case for most biological tissues. This impacts all aspects of bone function, but the interrelation of orientation and function remains to be fully explored outside the realm of biomechanics. For example, the organization of osteocyte lacunae is impacted by the organization of the mineralized collagen fibrils in the surrounding matrix [2], which in turn must be important for the regulation of bone turnover by these remodeling controlling cells. Orientation of bone structural elements can be done by tensor tomography based on the small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) signal [3, 4] and/or X-ray diffraction (XRD) signal [5, 6]. Combined with other imaging techniques [7], such methods provide important insights into tissue microstructure. I will discuss results on bone microstructure together with considerations for experimental design approaches that may allow addressing questions of biological/biomechanical import.
