Abstract : In 1927, de Broglie proposed to explain the apparent wave-particle duality exhibited by quantum systems in terms of a non-linear modification of Schroedinger’s equation.
His idea was that the non-linearity would prevent localised wave packets to spread, what corresponds to the modern concept of (...)

(Archives) "Wave-particle duality with naked eye" par Emmanuel Fort le jeudi 19 janvier 2012 à 13h30 en Amphithéatre PONTE (FST St Jérôme).
12 janvier 2012We have recently discovered a macroscopic object composed of a material particle dynamically coupled to a wave packet. The particle is a droplet bouncing on the surface of a vertically vibrated liquid bath ; its pilot-wave is the result of the superposition of the surface waves it excites. Above an excitation threshold, this symbiotic object, designated as a “walker” becomes self-propelled.
Such a walker exhibits several features previously thought to be specific to the microscopic (...) -

(Archives) Séminaire de Fernando Moreno le jeudi 1er Décembre 2011 à 13h30 : "Plasmons : from the ultraviolet to the THz"
23 novembre 2011L’Institut Fresnel (salle réunion 3ème étage) accueillera jeudi 1er décembre 2011 Monsieur Fernando Moreno en lieu et place de Monsieur Pablo Albella pour une présentation intitulée "Plasmons : from the ultraviolet to the THz" dont vous trouverez le résumé ci-dessous.
Plasmons : from the ultraviolet to the THz
An efficient means of achieving extreme light concentration is to use and control localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPPs), i.e., free charges in conducting structures (...) -

30 septembre 2011par Martin Oheim Laboratory of Neurophysiology & New Microscopies CNRS UMR 8154, INSERM U603 Université Paris Descartes
Résumé
Fluorescence microscopic imaging, at least with area detectors or upon confocal detection, establishes a point-to-point relationship between a voxel in object space and a group of pixels in image space. It thus relies on ballistic photons and all light, on the excitation or emission side that is deviated from its direct trajectory contributes to image (...) -

Résumé
Non-destructive testing and other detection applications are important in many practical situations (i.e. crack detection within railtracks for public safety implications) that involve waves in elastic media. Similar applications occur in electromagnetism for radar scattering and in acoustics.
A common situation is practice is that a scattering problem must be solved many times over for many different (...) -

5 juillet 2011par Richard V. Craster Mathematics department Imperial College, London
Résumé
It is highly desirable to be able to create continuum equations that embed a known microstructure through effective or averaged quantities such as wavespeeds or shear moduli. The methodology for achieving this at low frequencies and for waves long relative to a microstructure is well-known and such static or quasi-static theories are well developed. However, at high frequencies the multiple scattering by the (...) -

5 juillet 2011par Gerd Leuchs Max Planck Institut für die Physik des Lichts, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Erlangen, Germany
Abstract
There is a general recipe for achieving optimum coupling of light to resonant optical material systems, such as Fabry Perot resonators, super and sub wavelength antenna structures. The extreme case for the latter is a single atom, which will be treated in detail. This coupling between light and a single atom is probably the most fundamental process in quantum (...)
