(Archives) Séminaire de Fernando Moreno le jeudi 1er Décembre 2011 à 13h30 : "Plasmons : from the ultraviolet to the THz"

L’Institut Fresnel (salle réunion 3ème étage) accueillera jeudi 1er décembre 2011 Monsieur Fernando Moreno en lieu et place de Monsieur Pablo Albella pour une présentation intitulée "Plasmons : from the ultraviolet to the THz" dont vous trouverez le résumé ci-dessous.

Plasmons : from the ultraviolet to the THz

An efficient means of achieving extreme light concentration is to use and control
localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPPs), i.e., free charges in conducting structures coherently driven by electromagnetic radiation. In particular, LSPPs in conducting antennas are very attractive owing to their ability to focus the electromagnetic field at sub-wavelength scales leading to local field intensity enhancements of several orders of magnitude. This considerable field concentration, together with its sensitivity to changes in the geometrical and physical properties of the structure and surroundings, opens up novel possibilities for many applications. In fact, plasmonics has become one of the hottest fields in photonics today, with researchers exploring potential applications in sensing, optical computing, solar cells, surface enhanced Raman and even cancer treatments.
Although, intensive research on plasmonics is being carried out at visible and near
infrared frequencies mainly involving metals, plasmons, although further complicated, can also be excited in the ultraviolet and in the low frequency range (far-infrared, terahertz and microwaves) extending the range of the afore mentioned novel applications.
