Prof. Boris Kuhlmey (Institute of Photonics and Optical Science and CUDOS, Sydney) will give a Seminar "Drawing the invisible : fibres for hyperlenses and the emperor’s clothes" at Institut Fresnel, Marseille on Friday, September 19, 10:30 A.M. in Room Pierre Cotton.

Abstract : Metamaterials are artificial materials taking their properties from their sub-wavelength structure rather than their constituents, that have been shown to give unprecedented control over propagation of light.
In principle they can provide almost arbitrary permittivity and permeability tensors, with suggested applications ranging from lenses beating the diffraction limit to Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak, as reported (and at times widely exaggerated) in the general media. However, fabrication of metamaterials for the optical regime is extremely difficult, as highly structured, repetitive metallic features at a scale much smaller than the wavelength are required. We recently demonstrated that fibre drawing techniques can be used to produce metamaterials, with designed electric and even magnetic properties. The drawing technique can produce kilometres of metamaterials at a time, and these metamaterial fibres can then be woven into full three dimensional structures.
