7th edition of "Prix Départemental de la Recherche en Provence" took place on friday, December 2 at "Hôtel du département des Bouches du Rhône", Marseille, France.

Aude LEREU, Research Director at CNRS and member of the RCMO team, received on behalf of the consortium, the Special Jury Prize for their work on the understanding of the mechanisms and properties of wood, through the study of cell walls, at the nanometric scale. This research is led with teams from CINaM in Marseille (Anne Charier) and ORNL in Oak Ridge, USA (Ali Passian), thanks to an A*Midex grant from Aix Marseille University and collaboration with the companies NEASPEC & ATTOCUBE.

This international research group focuses on understanding the mechanisms of wood through the study of its cell walls at the nanoscale in order to reveal its chemical and physical properties. The methods used by the Consortium in nanoindentation and infrared nano-spectroscopy allow a reliable and complete description of the mechanical, optical and chemical properties of wood. The use of these methods by the community will be a major advance for comparing studies and will certainly be a reference method for obtaining quantitative measurements.

The stakes are multiple. It is a question of setting up more efficient and environmentally friendly wood processes and developing the use of new materials of plant origin. This promising work also opens the door to important spin-offs in the agri-food and energy sectors.
