Abstract :
Finite Element Time-Domain Approach to Full-Wave Computed Radar Tomography of Small Solar System Bodies
In this talk, I will describe a finite element time-domain (FETD) approach to full-wave computed radar tomography (CRT) with small solar system bodies (SSSBs) as a potential target. In CRT, the internal electric permittivity (or signal velocity) distribution of a given target domain is to determined. It is used extensively in geophysical surveys to map the structure and composition of ground layers and glacier ice as well as to localize and detect water and mineral resources. In full-wave CRT, the full wave field propagating through the domain is modeled mathematically which is important, especially, if the distribution of the measurement points is sparse.
Regarding the SSSBs, the ability to invert a sparse dataset is essential due to the strict in-situ limitations of the deep space missions. An FETD solver which allow accurate modeling of the asteroid surface and also adapting the element size flexibly in different parts of the computation domain. The adaptivity of the spatial finite element mesh is a key feature in optimizing the final system size which is necessary in graphics card accelerated computations.
