Cristina PONTI, Assistant Professor en Electromagnétisme, Department of Engineering, EMLAB3 Laboratory “Roma Tre” University, Italie, donnera un séminaire intitulé Modelling of Scattering Problems with the Cylindrical-Wave Approach le mercredi 7 février 2018 à 11h00 en salle Pierre Cotton de l’Institut Fresnel.

Résumé : The non-destructive testing of the subsurface is a field with interesting applications in the geophysical analysis of the subsoil, in archeology, in civil engineering, and in security. An accurate electromagnetic modelling of the scenario under investigation is useful to improve the interpretation of the measured data, as well as to serve as a benchmark for imaging algorithms.
Numerical techniques, as the Finite-Difference Time-Domain Method, are frequently used to simulate scattering scenarios, due to their wide flexibility. However, when the scattering problem can be modelled with targets of canonical shape, the use of analytical techniques can improve the physical understanding of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with targets. The EMLAB3 Laboratory of “Roma Tre” carries out a research on analytical and numerical methods for the solution of the forward scattering through the Cylindrical Wave Approach.
The technique is based on expansions into cylindrical waves, and can solve the scattering by circular crosssection cylinders buried in a half-space or in a stratified medium in a semi-analytical way. In its original formulation, the method is implemented in the frequency domain for a monochromatic source.
With an iterative approach, it can be extended to solve the scattering problem also in the time-domain, for a source with an assigned frequency spectrum. In a further implementation, the Cylindrical Wave Approach has been formulated to solve the scattering by targets placed below one or more dielectric layers.
This layout of scattering can model Through-the-Wall radar, a technique derived from the Ground Penetrating Radar, optimized to deal with the interaction of the electromagnetic field with a building wall, with applications mainly in the field of Security.
