Rachel Grange, Institute for Quantum Electronics, Department of Physics, ETH Zurich, Switzerland, will give a seminar "Applications of Nonlinear Optical Signal in GaAs Nanowires and LiNbO3 Nanowaveguides" on Thursday, December 1st, 2016 in Room Pierre Cotton

Abstract :
Nonlinear optical processes are known to be weak in bulk materials and extremely small at the nanoscale since they mainly scale with the volume. Nevertheless, here I will show how to use nonlinear optical responses to distinguish crystal structures in semiconductor nanowires and how to increase second-harmonic signal in Perovskite nanowaveguides for local light delivery.
First I will report an optical method to characterize crystal phases along GaAs nanowires, based on the measurement of polarization-dependent second-harmonic generation. This powerful imaging method is based on a per-pixel analysis of the second-harmonic generated signal. The dependence of the second-harmonic responses on the nonlinear second-order susceptibility tensor allows to distinguish areas of pure wurtzite, zinc blende, mixed and rotational twins crystal structures in individual nanowires. [1] Second I will explain how high aspect ratio lithium niobate (LiNbO3) nanowaveguides can be engineered for enhanced nonlinear optical power. [2] Those bright nanostructures can serve for developing compact efficient nonlinear optical sources or waveguides.
