B. Gralak is a 1997 graduate engineer of Ecole Polytechnique, and then received the PhD degree in 2001 and the HDR in 2010. He is presently chargé de recherche CNRS at Institut Fresnel, leader of the team EPSILON and coordinator of the research axis “Electromagnetism and Metamaterials” of the Institut Fresnel, animator of the GT1 of GDR Ondes of CNRS ( and director of the IRN PHOTONET of CNRS ( He has published more than 55 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. The main scientific contributions are the first numerical proof of negative index in photonic crystals [ J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 17, 1012 (2000)], the numerical validation of the first thermal emission scanning tunnelling microscope [Nature 444, 740 (2006)], the extension to metamaterials of an augmented formalism enabling the simplification of absorption and dispersion [ J. Math. Phys. 51, 052902 (2010); J. Math. Phys. 58, 071501 (2017)] and the design of numerous optical devices: antireflection gratings, non-reciprocal device, flat lens, invisibility carpet, gratings for filtering…
