Maciej NAPIOSKOWSKI, Institute of Physics, Wroclaw University of Technology – (WRUT), Poland, will give a seminar "Optical fibers and transformation optics - modeling and results" on Tuesday, September 22 at 13:30.
Institut Fresnel, meeting room at the 3rd Floor

Abstract :
Transformation optics formalism is a powerful tool which can be used for rigorous numerical simulations of bend and twisted optical fibers. Using this method the change of the fiber’s geometry is accurately represented as an effective change of its permittivity and permeability tensors. We have modeled the propagation and polarization characteristics of various bend and twisted optical fibers using the transformation optics with finite element method. First part of the presentation will focus on the effect of bending and twisting on the surface plasmon resonance spectra of the fibers coated with a metal layer. Then the effect of twist on the birefringence, the field profile evolution and the loss of the core modes in a helical-core large mode area fiber will be discussed. Finally the twist induced coupling between core and cladding modes in a helical-core and double helix fibers will be analyzed. Results obtained for the twisted fibers reveal the phenomena, which could not be predicted by alternative simplified approaches and highlight the importance of rigorous methods utilizing the transformation optics formalism.
